Nigerian singer Wizkid has been crowned favourite Afrobeats artist of the year, at the just concluded 2022 American Music Award held in Los Angeles, United States of America.
The Nigerian singer Wizkid who recently dropped a new album, defeated fellow nominees in the same categories, the likes of Burna Boy, CKay, Fireboy DML, and Tems to the AMAs award.
The win by Wizkid, makes him the first and only Nigerian to have won the award in the category which was introduced into the AMAs awards in 2022.
It was a double win for Nigeria, as while Wizkid took home the award for Favourites Afrobeats artist, Tems also took home an award after winning the category of Favourite Hip-Hop Song ‘Wait For U’ which she was featured in alongside Future and Drake.
The 2022 American Music Awards which is an annual fan-voted awards show was held at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and featured a star-studded lineup of famous faces from the music world and beyond, with Taylor Swift winning big on the night.
Aside the award won by Nigerian singer Wizkid, Taylor Swift was the biggest winner on the night, taking home six awards, including Artist of the Year.
Other winners of the night at the 2022 American Music Awards included Beyoncé, who took Favorite R&B Artist and Bad Bunny, who managed to take two, including Favorite Make Latin Artist. Harry Styles, BTS, Morgan Wallen, Tems, Wizkid and Kendrick Lamar each took two awards
