South Shore Drive Shooting Leaves 5-Month-Old Girl Dead

A South Shore drive shooting has left a 5-month-old girl dead after she was shot in the head Friday evening and later died, cbsnews reports.

According to the report, the South Shore drive shooting happened around 6 p.m. in the 7700 block, police said.

The baby, identified as Cecilia Thomas by the Medical Examiner’s Office, was in a tan Chevrolet when another vehicle pulled up and someone inside fired shots, police said.

The driver of the car made it to 71st Street between Crandon and Luella avenues about a mile and a half away and sought help.

The baby was rushed to the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

According to cbsnews report, it is unclear who else was inside the car with the baby at the time of the shooting, but a 41-year-old man was also shot in the incident. He was shot in the eye area and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

At least a dozen of the girl’s family members gathered outside Comer following the shooting.

“All we heard was baby got shot in the car,” said one relative, who declined to give their name.

“She got shot in the head,” a woman screamed at an officer near the emergency room entrance of the hospital.

“I hope y’all catch whoever did this,” a woman screamed through tears at her phone. “Took that damn baby’s life.”

A nurse at Comer saw paramedics bringing the child in for treatment.

“I’ve never in my 61 years of life seen anything like this,” said the nurse, Jackie, who declined to give her last name.

The nurse said two of her own children have been killed by gunfire and a third was left paralyzed after being shot at a party.

“You never know what it’s like to have a broken heart until you go through it,” she said.

The baby’s mother told a victim advocate her daughter was on the way home at the time of the shooting.

“I spoke with this mother. Yes, she’s very distraught,” said crisis responder Andrew Holmes. “That’s a five month old baby. Nine months she carried that baby, nourished that baby. And it take a damn fool to discharge that weapon and take baby’s life.”

Holmes reminded those responsible of the number of POD cameras in the area that may have captured the shooting and could lead to their capture.

“I hope you don’t have no children yourself. Because if you do, you shouldn’t sleep at night, you should just turn yourself here knowing you got to look at your child every night. And you done take this lady’s child,” he said. “The baby rested right now, but ain’t gonna be no peace with that family the rest of their life.”

No one was in custody late Friday.

Area detectives are investigating.

Ja’Mal Green, who is running for Chicago mayor, announced a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this case.
