Balogun Market: Fire Razes Shops In Popular Lagos Market

Traders at the Popular Balogun market, Lagos Island have been met with tragedy just a few days to Christmas as fire razed down shops and goods worth millions of naira early Thursday morning.

Some owners of the affected shops were seen heartbroken seeing their shops and goods burnt to ashes thereby dashing their hopes of the festive season sales.

The outbreak which now seems like a yearly occurrence was reported to have razed down the Balogun market in November 2019 and January 2020 making this the third time in a row.

The cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be ascertained at the time of filing this report.

Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs Adeseye Margaret, said the fire was put off at 07.40 am.

In a statement titled, stop Trending: Fire affects three shops on Lagos Island’, she said, “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service attended to a Fire Call at about 05:50 hours Thursday at Gbade Plaza, 24, Nnamdi Azikwe Street, Lagos Island.

“The Fire which involved only three shops at the ground floor from among 56 shops in the three-storey plaza was met well alight and extinguished from escalating to adjoining structures in the boisterous Lagos market.

“It is on record that the Fire has completely been put out at 0740 hours with a combined effort of the Federal Fire Service as an investigation into the cause is ongoing while no casualty was recorded.”
