Barcelona and Netherlands forward, Memphis Depay has paid a special tribute to one of football’s greats and Barcelona legend, Johan Cruyff. He did this, a day after he equalled his international goal scoring record for the Netherlands.

Memphis Depay had scored his first hat-trick for the Netherlands on Tuesday, to equal Johan Cruyff and Abe Lenstra as joint 8th top goalscorer for the Netherlands. And given that he just recently moved to Barcelona, where Cruyff also made his mark, the player could not help but make a social media post about the legend.

The Barcelona forward surpassed Wesley Sneijder and pulled level with the legendary figure with an impressive display for Louis van Gaal’s team.

The Barcelona player now has 33 goals to his name for his country from 71 appearances.

Where Is Memphis Depay In The Goal Charts?

Depay’s impressive display in the World Cup qualifying match saw him break into the top 10 in his country’s list of all-time top scorers.

He pulled level with Wesley Sneijder with his first goal before surpassing the former captain with his second in the first half.

Depay then knocked the ball over the line in the second period to move him up to joint-eighth in the list.

He is now level with football icon Cruyff and Abe Lenstra, who represented the Netherlands in the 1940s and 1950s.

But while Depay has 71 caps to his name, Cruyff managed to net 33 goals for the Oranje in just 47 matches, helping them reach the 1974 World Cup final along the way.

How Memphis Depay equalled the Record?

Memphis Depay who has shown that he is in great form, was the star of the show on Tuesday, as the Netherlands thumped Turkey 6-1 in World Cup qualifying.

The Barcelona summer signing needed just one minute to get the Oranje up and running by providing an assist for Davy Klaassen to open the scoring.

Klaassen then returned the favour on 16 minutes with a great flick for Memphis to latch on to and then dispatch a brilliant finish past the goalkeeper.

There was more to come from Memphis too before the half-time break. The Netherlands won a penalty when Klaassen was tripped by Caglar Soyuncu which offered Memphis another chance to score.

The Barcelona forward made no mistake at all from the spot, netting with a cheeky Panenka to make it 3-0 and effectively end the game as a contest.

Memphis’s goal helped Louis van Gaal, as he got the chance to rest Frenkie de Jong at half-time. The midfielder came off and was replaced by Teun Koopmeiners for the second 45.

The Dutch kept on scoring in the second half. Memphis ensured he went home with the match ball by netting his third from close range to make it 4-0 on 54 minutes. It’s the forward’s first-ever international hat-trick.

What Did Depay Say After Equalling The Record:

Depay said after the game that he hopes to climb even further up the national team’s goal chart, while he admitted that he could have performed even better against Turkey.

“I’m happy, but I expect more from myself. People think that I’m always floating and that everything is going well,” he said to NOS.

“I’m important and threatening, I always will be, whatever happens. I thought it was a great evening with a great atmosphere, I hope everyone enjoyed it.

“[Cruyff and Lenstra] are two legends, you can’t compare them to anyone. They have done so many defining things and put Netherlands on the map.

“For me it’s great that I keep scoring goals and that we win. I strive for more. I want to be in the top three of the top scorers list.”
