18 people killed after an attack by bandits in Tsauwa village in Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State, the State Police Command has confirmed on Tuesday.

Police say the attack which saw 18 people killed, took place on Monday night. The bandits shot at people fleeing to neighbouring communities.

Residents said the gunmen were believed to have carried out the attack in retaliation for the killing of three gunmen by security forces and vigilantes on Friday.

They said the gunmen attempted to kidnap people in the area. The bandits also carted away cattle and other animals and set fire on buildings.

Katsina State Commissioner of Police Sanusi Buba told reporters that security forces were trying to track down the gunmen.

No official statement has been released by the Katsina state government on the latest incident as at the time of this report.
