Former President Barack Obama has expressed shock and sadness over Vernon Jordan’s death.
Vernon Jordan’s death was announced on Tuesday, as the late lawyer and civil rights was reported to have died on Monday evening surrounded by his family. His daughter, Vickee Jordan, said in an emailed statement Tuesday.
He was aged 85.
Obama took to his official social media handle on Tuesday 2nd March 2021, to post a photo of himself and the late Vernon with this message as a caption:
“Like so many others, Michelle and I benefited from Vernon Jordan’s wise counsel and warm friendship—and deeply admired his tireless fight for civil rights. We hope the memory of his extraordinary presence and the legacy of his work bring comfort to Ann, Vickee, and his family,” he said.
Vernon Jordan served as the executive director for the United Fund, which funds scholarships for Black students, and as president of the National Urban League for ten years, from 1971 to 1981.
He headed up the Urban League after graduating from Harvard Law School, and his advice was sought after by those on the top of government and business.
Vickee Jordan the daughter posted this message to confirmed the sad news saying: he “passed away peacefully last evening surrounded by loved ones”.
“We appreciate all of the outpouring of love and affection,” she added.
