Sasa Community: Makinde Orders The Reopening Market

Governor Seyi Makinde has ordered the reopening of the market in Sasa community following a meeting with community leaders, and stakeholders of the market. This comes a few weeks after the Governor shutdown the market and imposed a 24-hour curfew on Sasa community following the violent clashes involving some youths in the market.

The decision then, according to Governor Seyi Makinde, follows the continued killings and destruction of property in the market.

While the market in Sasa community has been ordered to reopen, the Governor stepped down the request to reopen Iroko market, where the crisis between the Yoruba traders and their Fulani counterparts originated from and spread to the other parts of state.

The Governor said his decision to reopen the market was made after listening to the leaders and traders of Sasa community and considering the economic implications.

“I directed that the market be reopened except the Iroko market where the crisis originated from which is to remain closed.

I appealed to both ethnic groups to restore their previous amicable relationship. I also directed that the market be cleared of all debris, solar street lights installed to ensure the market environment is well-lit and palliatives distributed to the affected traders,” he said.

Trouble started in Sasa community when some Hausa traders allegedly killed a Yoruba trader in the market.

At the end of the weeklong crisis, three persons were killed in the clash while shops and other properties were said to have been burnt in the area.
