Brighton rescued a late point from Liverpool after they were awarded a late penalty in the game. Both teams with host converting their late penalty, ended up playing out a 1-1 draw after 90+minutes.

Liverpool went ahead in the game, courtesy of a goal from Jota who cannot stop scoring, as it came after Salah’s goal was disallowed for offside, and Maupay missing from the spot early in the game for Brighton.

The goal from Brighton came in late, after Robertson took down Welbeck. He catches Welbeck first and then a bit of the ball.

The referee after consulting with the pitchside monitor, decided to gave Brighton a penalty, and a massive point to Brighton who now move to double figures for points, with Liverpool now on 21 points and topping the table.

Speaking to British Sport after the game, Jordan Henderson, who obviously was not pleased with the result of the game, had this to say:

It was ours. It should be three points, in my opinion. I’ve seen the replay. Who would be happy? It’s not a pen. It feels like we’re standing here every week and discussing incidents. I don’t want to get into trouble, but for me it’s not a penalty.

“Danny Welbeck said to me it wasn’t a penalty. There were four or five of them who felt it wasn’t a penalty. To overturn it, it has to be clear and obvious.

Is that a clear and obvious penalty, to go to the screen and overturn it. Obviously the referees know better than us, but I thought the lads were brilliant today and deserve the three points.

“In the first half there were things we could improve on, in the second half we did that. We had a couple of goals ruled off for offside. Overall we’ve got to be positive and take the performance out of it, because the result isn’t anything else but an error in my option. You’d rather get beat by two or three than end up like that. It feels like two points taken away from us.

Danny Welbeck also speaking to British Sport, said:

“It was one of those games where we had to try and stick in until the end. We knew we could create some opportunities and exploit their backline. We got a soft penalty but it’s one we will take. We got the point and we’ll move on now to next week.

“In today’s game with the VAR, I got there in front and nicked it around him. He kicked me and then the ball, so… The referee went to see it on the screen and made his decision.

“The gaffer said we would rather go down fighting. Going into this game we knew we could cause problems. They have so much firepower but we wanted some firepower of our own. We could have gone ahead in the game but these things happen.

“They could have gone further ahead with the VAR and offside rules. There’s no benefit of the doubt in today’s game but it’s 1-1 and that’s how it’s ended”, he added.

The draw takes Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League for now. But Tottenham, Chelsea or Leicester who are yet to play, could replace them after their games.
