The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced 476 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections in the country as of Thursday 20th August 20202, to 50,964.

The NCDC announced the 476 new cases on its official twitter handle on Thursday in the country.

The health agency said that a multi-sectoral national Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), activated at Level 3, has continued to coordinate the national response activities across the country.

The agency on Wednesday, said while 476 new cases were recorded, 50,964 cases have been confirmed, 37,569 cases discharged and 992 deaths recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory(FCT).

The NCDC said that the 476 new cases were recorded from 18 states of the federation with Plateau and Lagos having the highest numbers. The distribution shows the following:

Kaduna-41 

Borno-33 

Plateau-28 

Abia-13 

Edo-13 

Rivers-12 

Imo-11 

Oyo-10 

Kano-9 

Kwara-7 

Enugu-5 

Katsina-5 

Gombe-4 

Ogun-4 

Nasarawa-1 

Zamfara-1 

The health agency also said that COVID-19 could present as mild symptoms, making it difficult to differentiate from illnesses such as malaria.

“The only way to diagnosis is through testing. We advise Nigerians to self-report if they notice known symptoms,” it stated.

NCDC added that to break the chain of COVID-19 transmission, Nigerians must maintain physical distance and keep cleaning their hands.

It also advised people to keep away from big crowds and cover their mouth and nose when coughing.
