The current alarming rate of rape, other forms of abuse against women, girls, children, and the elderly in Nigeria has been the centre of attention to the Ministry of Women Affairs, and the Honourable Minister, Pauline Tallen.
Mrs Pauline Tallen moved by the recently reported cases of rape across the country, on Wednesday 10th June 2020, said the Ministry is keeping her nose to the grindstone with others to curtail the endemic.
The ministry of women affairs said to do this, they are researching factors breeding rampant cases of rape and abuse of minors, and to cutail the scourge of Sexual Gender-Based Violence.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen said this while presenting a memo on Sexual Gender-Based Violence to the Federal Executive Council meeting, where she urged that the matter should be taken as a matter of urgent national importance.
Mrs Paulin Tallen while briefing the media on their presentation at the meeting of the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday, said the research was necessitated by the escalation in the trend, which she described as worrisome, saying the outcome would determine actions to be taken to deal with the situation.
Mrs Tallen said they had decided to push for the domestication of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act 2015 in states to ensure that rapists face deserved punishments.
She said they also called for a media campaign and aggressive public enlightenment on the need for people to rise and speak up against abuse of minors and rape cases.
