British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has finally left the hospital, a few days after leaving the intensive care unit of the St Thomas’s Hospital in London, where he was rushed to after his coronavirus situation worsened.
Boris Johnson was discharged from the St Thomas’s Hospital on Sunday 12th April 2020, and will now continue to recover from coronavirus at Chequers, his country home.
The Prime Minister was admitted to hospital last Sunday with ‘persistent coronavirus symptoms’ after testing positive for COVID-19 at the end of March. He was then moved to intensive care on Monday evening but was taken back to a general ward on Thursday.
A spokesperson said today: ‘The PM has been discharged from hospital to continue his recovery, at Chequers. On the advice of his medical team, the PM will not be immediately returning to work.
‘He wishes to thank everybody at St Thomas’ for the brilliant care he has received. All of his thoughts are with those affected by this illness.’
While in hospital he was described as being in ‘high spirits’ by a Downing Street spokesperson and was said to be boosted by a letter from his partner Carrie Symonds, who is expecting the couple’s first child. Ms Symonds said in a statement today that she ‘cannot thank our magnificent NHS enough’ for helping Johnson.
She continued: ‘The staff at St Thomas’ Hospital have been incredible. I will never, ever be able to repay you and I will never stop thanking you.’ The PM previously thanked the NHS staff who had treated him from inside the hospital, stating that he ‘owed them’ his life.
Johnson confirmed that he had tested positive for COVID-19 on March 27, stating that he was suffering from ‘mild symptoms’ of the virus.
He was then taken to hospital following the advice of a doctor, who spoke to him on video chat on April 6. He initially continued to lead the government, but later handed the reins to First Secretary of State Dominic Raab after taken to the intensive care at the St Thomas’ Hospital in Westminster for tests and observation after his coronavirus symptoms persisted for 10 days. He has been out of the Intensive Care Unite before today’s good news.
