The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Monday confirmed five new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

According to the NCDC: “The five new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Nigeria: 2 in FCT, 2 in Lagos and 1 in Edo. Two of the cases are returning travellers from the UK

“As at 09:45 am on 23rd March, there are 35 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria. 2 have been discharged.

For a breakdown of cases by states in real-time, currently; Lagos has 24; FCT, 6; Ogun, 2; Ekiti, 1; Oyo, 1; and Edo, 1.

Total: 35 confirmed cases.

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar announce on twitter Monday morning that one of his children tested positive for the virus.

He twitted saying:

“My son has tested positive to coronavirus. @NCDCGov

has been duly informed, and he has been moved to Gwagwalada Specialist Teaching Hospital in Abuja for treatment and management. I will appreciate it if you have him in your prayers. Stay safe, coronavirus is real. -AA” he said.

The NCDC had also raised alarm over the influx of people from countries with high cases of coronavirus saying “they are the biggest source of transmission.”

“Our biggest source of risk in travellers returning from high-risk countries are expected to self isolate for 14 days.

Our appeal to Nigerians is to take responsibility and prevent further transmission of the virus. Collective action is critical to control spread,” NCDC said on Twitter.

Lagos State Director of Epidemiology, Biosecurity and Global Health, Dr Ismail Abdul-Salam, recently said that on a daily basis, not less than 38,000 people came into the country through the ports while 730 of this number are from coronavirus high-risk countries.
