Coronavirus: Manchester City Player Benjamin Mendy Self-Isolate

Manchester City has confirmed that their player and defender, Benjamin Mendy is self-isolating, as a precaution after a member of his family was admitted to hospital displaying symptoms of coronavirus.

Benjamin Mendy who is yet to confirm his status was reported to have trained with his team-mates on Thursday, before going into self-isolation. But no information as to whether those he had close contact with at the training ground are also self-isolating, as a measure to contain the spread, if his result eventually turns out to be positive.

Manchester City confirming the situation of Benjamin Mendy released a statement saying:

“The club is aware that a family member of a senior men’s team player is in a hospital with symptoms of a respiratory illness,” said a City statement.

“He has undergone tests at a hospital, one of which is for Covid-19.”

The statement added: “Until the results are known, the player in question is self-isolating as a precaution.”

If confirmed, Benjamin Mendy will be the latest player to have been tested positive for the coronvirus, after Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, yet to be confirmed cases of three Leicester City players and Hudson Odoi of Chelsea. But the Premier League management are still reluctant to call off the season, despite the increasing cases of infected persons in the United Kingdom.

The premier league game between Burnley and Manchester City on Saturday at the Etihad is expected to go on, despite the situation on the ground.

Their league match against Arsenal on Wednesday and Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid on 17 March have already been postponed because of coronavirus concerns.
