Governor Seyi Makinde Signs Bill For Operation Amotekun Into Law

The Governor of Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has signed the bill of Operation Amotekun into law, signalling the kickoff of the Oyo State Security Network, known as Operation Amotekun.

Governor Seyi Makinde signed the Amotekun bill on Tuesday, a week after it was passed into law by the state House of Assembly.

The signing ceremony took place at the Government House in Agodi, Ibadan, the state capital, and was witnessed by members of the State House of Assembly, and some key cabinet members in the State.

After signing the bill, Mr Makinde said Operation Amotekun will support federal government security agencies in tackling security challenges in the state.

“It will create a safe and secure environment for people to carry out their daily transaction peacefully,” he said.

The governor said he was hopeful that the creation of Amotekun will create a safe environment for investments in the state.

Operation Amotekun (Leopard) was established on 9 January 2020 by the six state governors of all the South Western states of Nigeria, namely; Lagos State, Oyo State, Ogun State, Ondo State, Osun State and Ekiti State.

The establishment of the security outfit was subject to the decision by all the six state governors at the regional security summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria on June 2019 through Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission (DAWN).

The operatives of the security outfit will assist police, other security agencies and traditional rulers in combating terrorism, banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping and also help in settling herdsmen and farmers contentions in the region.
