U.S House Speaker and leader of Democrats in the House, Nancy Pelosi has announced the drafting of the impeachment articles against President Donald Trump.
Nancy Pelosi said she asked for the impeachment articles to be drawn up against the president over claims he abused his office, saying “Our democracy is what is at stake.
“The president leaves us no choice but to act.”
A house committee has been conducting an impeachment inquiry into Mr Trump, which has laid the foundations for the latest action.
Pelosi said Thursday morning that: ‘If we allow a president to be above the law, we do so surely at the peril of our republic. In America, no one is above the law.’ Pelosi and other Democrats have accused Trump of abusing his office by asking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to open an investigation into his political rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
She said:‘In the course of today’s events, it becomes necessary for us to address, among other grievances, the president’s failure to faithfully execute the law”, she said.
Pelosi did not elaborate on the charges, but Democrats have said they are considering multiple articles of impeachment against Trump including obstruction of justice, obstruction of Congress and abuse of power.
Amid of all the drama, President Trump who just returned from the United Kingdom on Thursday, tweeted this about the move by the House:
‘If you are going to impeach me, do it now, fast,’ adding that he wants a ‘fair trial in the Senate.’ ‘We will have Schiff, the Bidens, Pelosi and many more testify, and will reveal, for the first time, how corrupt our system really is. I was elected to “Clean the Swamp,” and that’s what I am doing!’
He continued: “The Do Nothing, Radical Left Democrats have just announced that they are going to seek to Impeach me over NOTHING. They already gave up on the ridiculous Mueller “stuff,” so now they hang their hats on two totally appropriate (perfect) phone calls with the Ukrainian President.
This will mean that the beyond important and seldom used act of Impeachment will be used routinely to attack future Presidents. That is not what our Founders had in mind. The good thing is that the Republicans have NEVER been more united. We will win!” he said.
Pelosi reportedly met behind closed doors with her Democratic caucus on Wednesday, asking them ‘Are you ready?’ According to those in the room, the answer was a resounding yes. The Democrats are now surging towards a Christmastime vote on removing the 45th president.
Mr Trump has long branded the inquiry a “witch hunt” and has pleaded his innocence throughout. But his only hope is the Senate where the Republicans have the majority, and he is heavily counting on them to escape being impeached.
