The ousted President of Bolivia, Evo Morales has a few hours ago, touched down in Mexico City, where he was granted an Asylum by President Manuel Lopez Obrador of Mexico, after he was allegedly forced to resign by the Bolivian Army and Police.

President Manuel Lopex Obrador had in the wake of the bloodless coup that ousted President Evo Morales, after a disputed Presidentail election results in the country, offered to give Evo an Asylum in Mexico, to ease the tension in the country, and to protest him from a possible assassination. This comes after the ex-president also had alleged that a bounty was placed on his head after he was forced to resigned.

As we reported a few days ago, President Evo Morales had announced his resignation as president of Bolivia after weeks of violent protests that greeted the Presidential election results where opposition leaders have alleged electoral fraud, after Evo Morales claimed victory.

He was met at Mexico City’s airport on Tuesday 12th November 2019, by the nation’s foreign secretary Marcelo Ebrard, after a flight from Bolivia on a Mexican government plane.

“The president of Mexico saved my life,” Mr Morales said, thanking President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador for granting him asylum.

“Very grateful to my brother Manuel Lopez Obrador and the government and people of Mexico for saving my life. We arrived safe and sound with our brothers Alvaro and Gbariela. The coup offered fifty thousand to a security member to deliver me before my resignation” he said.

Taking to his social media, he said:

“It pains me to leave the country for political reasons, but I’ll always be concerned,” he said

“l’ll return soon, with more strength and energy.”

What ever happens, Evo Morales will always be remembered for his historic achievement as one of the best leaders Bolivia have produced, as the former coca growers’ union leader who as president helped lift millions out of poverty, increased social rights and presided over nearly 14 years of stability and high economic growth in South America’s poorest country. But the greed to remain in power despite calls for a change, and his reluctance to give up power by seeking a re-election after election, has seen him fall.
