After a hard-fought election that almost saw him and his Liberal Party losing, the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau is to now form a minority government, after narrowly escaping defeat. He defeated his main rival, Conservative leader Andrew Scheer in a tight race to that will now see the Liberal Party stay in government for four more years.
Justin Trudeau who became popular for his immigration and other friendly policies was almost not making it back, after he was hit with scandals especially the ‘blackface’ during the campaign, but somehow, the ruling Liberal Party and himself won to retained power. But will form a minority government to have any meaningful impact in the passing of bills .
According to reports, the result from the Canada election means Prime Minister Mr Trudeau will require the support of a smaller left-leaning party after the hard-fought campaign.
The Liberals had won or were leading in 156 out of 338 seats in Monday’s vote, according to Elections Canada. That put the Liberals far short of the 170 seats needed for a second straight majority government.
Prime Minister Trudeau who was confident of his victory, while speaking to supporters in Montreal on Tuesday, said:
“You did it, my friends. Congratulations,”
Mr Trudeau, who took power in 2015, was in favour of immigration laws that allow people into Candana, which made him more popular amongst the migrants. But his rival, Conservative leader Andrew Scheer wanted the opposite, and although, it was a tight race, the Conservative and Andrew Scheer could have easily won the election, if they have looked at the immigration laws and others differently.
From the election result, it is expected that Mr Trudeau and his party ally with the New Democratic Party (NDP) to push through key legislation after failing to secure a majority vote. This could help both parties achieve their aims, as the NDP could have a major influence on Trudeau’s next government.
