Prince Harry sues owners of two British tabloids, The Sun and Daily Mirror for alleged phone hacking. The Buckingham Palace confirmed this on Friday.
According to the report by Evening Standard, legal documents have been filed on behalf of the Duke of Sussex at the High Court regarding the alleged illegal interception of voicemail messages.
A spokeswoman for News Group Newspapers which owns The Sun and the defunct News of The World spoke to Evening Standard about the situation, saying: “We confirm that a claim has been issued by the Duke of Sussex. We have no further comment to make at the current time.”
Also, a source at Reach plc, which owns the Mirror, said they were aware that proceedings had been issued but had not yet received them, so they were unable to comment further, the report had added.
The latest legal action is coming a few days after Prince Harry issued a strong statement, where he was defending his wife Meghan Markle and condemning how British tabloids have deliberately singled her out for their selfish and malicious reasons, which he called “ruthless” treatment and bullying. He said:
“Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son,” Harry said.
He went on to say that the whole gang up against Meghan is “painful” and the impact of intrusive media coverage had forced the couple to take action.
Referring to his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales, the prince said his “deepest fear is history repeating itself”.
“I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person,” he said.
Speaking about the whole issue, especially Bullying back in Tembisa, a township near Johannesburg in South Africa where they have been for a 10-day tour, Prince Harry said:
“We will firmly stand up for what we believe,” . “We are fortunate enough to have a position that gives us amazing opportunities, and we will do everything that we can to play our part in building a better world.”
“We will always seek to challenge injustice and to speak out for those who may feel unheard,”
He continued. “So no matter your background, your nationality, your age or gender, your sexuality, your physical ability, no matter your circumstance or colour of your skin — we believe in you, and we intend to spend our entire lives making sure you have the opportunity to succeed and change the world.”
