The seven-time Formula One world champion, Michael Schumacher who has been injured since December 2013, is reported to be undergoing a secret treatment with cutting-edge stem-cell therapy at the Georges Pompidou European Hospital in Paris, according to a French newspaper, le Parisien.
According to the report, Michael Schumacher as revealed by Le Parisien was hospitalized at the hospital’s cardiovascular surgery department. The 50-year-old was said to have been enclosed in a navy blue cover that completely obscures his body and face, as doctors were being careful not to expose his identify as he was being transported with a stretcher.
The newspaper said various sources which they did not name, said Michael Schumacher made at least two visits to the Georges Pompidou European Hospital last spring. Both times, he arrived by helicopter from Switzerland and landed at the heliport of Issy-les-Moulineaux (Hauts-de-Seine), not far from the establishment.
During his first stay in Paris, the discreet patient was even the subject of medical examinations, in another establishment of the AP-HP: the university hospital of the Pitié-Salpêtrière, located in Paris in the 13th arrondissement. At the end of last July, the pilot was due to return for a new session at the Georges Pompidou European Hospital. But an unexpected health problem prevented him. The treatment was postponed to this beginning of the week, date of the return of vacation of Professor Menasché.
The paper said about 10 security agents, some equipped with earphones, watched over the patient.
Schumacher’s family fiercely protects his privacy. Thick forest around his castle-like home and high surrounding walls provide sanctuary from fan and media intrusion.
Schumacher won a record 91 Formula One races before retiring in 2012. He was skiing with his son Mick — who now races in F2 — when he fell on Dec. 29, 2013.
He hit the right side of his head on a rock, splitting open his helmet. Doctors worked frantically to remove blood clots from his brain, but some were left because they were too deeply embedded.
