The 1999 sci-fi classic movie The Matrix, is making its way back to the theatres as it prepares to mark its 20th anniversary.

This will be the first time the film, which inspired a generation of filmmakers and sci-fi storytellers will be screened in the cinemas and from August 30th to September 5th, which is just one week. But no talk of a remake, just to for anniversary purposes.

According to Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, the movie will be screened at more than 135 Dolby Cinema AMC locations on those dates, as Doug Darrow, senior vice president of Dolby Laboratories’ Cinema Business Group, in a statement on Monday, and as reported by entertainment weekly, said:

“Bringing The Matrix to life in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos pays homage to the masterpiece that the Wachowskis created 20 years ago,”

“Movie lovers will be able to see and experience unforgettable sequences like bullets flying in slow motion with the utmost detail – transforming one of the most iconic sci-fi films of this generation.”

Keanu Reeves as Neo, Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, and Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus grace the official poster for the theatrical return.

The verge also reported that Matrix which was written and directed by sibling duo Lana and Lilly Wachowski, was released on March 31st, 1999 but given that the film came out so long ago, there are likely plenty of fans who never had the chance to see it properly in theatres.

Or, more cynically, given Keanu Reeves’ recent current run of pop-culture hype (specifically, the popularity of John Wick 3 and his viral “breathtaking” E3 appearance), it’s possible both Warner Bros. and AMC want to cash in on the moment with the limited release, which just coincidentally can be tied to the significant anniversary of the film as an excuse to extend the summer of Keanu. The verge reported.

For those of us outside of the United States and great fans of the Matrix, it is still not clear if there are any provisions made for us to also see the movie and celebrate the 20th anniversary with them. But we are keeping our fingers crossed that local cinemas will get the chance to show the film.
