Ex-Major League Baseball star David Ortiz was a victim of yet another robbery incident in the Dominican Republic, as he was reportedly shot during a robbery attempt while inside a bar with friends.
According to reports, the father to David Ortiz, Leo Ortiz told ESPN after the ugly incident, that his son was shot while at an amusement centre in Santa Domingo.
“They called me to tell me that David is injured and that they took him to a medical centre, but they did not tell me how he is or exactly where he was transferred,” he said.
David Ortiz played 20 seasons in the majors and made 10 all-star teams. He won three World Series titles as a member of the Boston Red Sox.
According to the Dominican state media, David Ortiz was shot in a bar located on Avenida Venezuela, Santo Domingo Este.
The incident occurred in Dial Bar and Lounge, on Avenida Venezuela, and according to witnesses, two young men on a motorcycle fired at David Ortiz, hitting him in the back with a shot in the stomach.
The report also stated that after the shooting, the emergency was called in and on arriving at the scene of the shooting, Ortiz to a health centre in the National District, while one of those responsible for the shooting was arrested and beaten by those present at the amusement centre and then handed over to members of the Police National.
It was reported that his friend Joel López was also present at the site, who also would have been slightly wounded by one of the shots. So far the authorities have not reported the reasons for the incident, but he is said to be in good condition.
