Iconic singer and one of New Orleans and America’s greats, Malcolm John Rebennack who was popularly known as Dr John has been reported to have died on Thursday, of a heart attack at just age 77

Dr John was one of the most talented and devoted musicians, to have come out of New Orleans and America, and was a member the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame who had six Grammy awards to his name before his death

According to reports, the death of Dr John was announced by his publicist and social media manager Karen Beninato on Thursday morning 6th June 2019.

Malcolm John Rebennack, aka Dr John (November 20, 1941 – June 6, 2019), was a singer, songwriter and musician from New Orleans, Louisiana and an iconic figure of the New Orleans music scene.

Dr John started his career as a professional musician in the late 1950s. He performed in clubs and bars in New Orleans and worked with some of the greatest musicians of the time, including Professor Longhair, James Booker and Earl King.

In 1968, Dr John’s first breakthrough came in the with the album Gris-Gris, a combination of New Orleans rhythm and blues with psychedelic rock. It was the beginning of a long and successful career, marked by the release of iconic albums such as In the right Place released in 1973.

Dr John is the winner of 6 Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. Dr John was also famous for his elaborate stage shows that bordered on voodoo religious ceremonies, including elaborate costumes and headdress.
