After months of unsuccessful steps at taking Britain out of the European Union, coupled with the pressure from her MPs, British PM Theresa May has announced that she will be resigning as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, come June 7th 2019.
The embattled British PM Theresa May said she will step down as Conservative Party leader on 7 June, as she broke down in tears when she was making her announcement.
Theresa May even with her announcement of resignation, will continue to serve as prime minister while a Conservative leadership contest takes place.
The British PM was under pressure to quit after a backlash from her own MPs against her Brexit plan and Parliament has also rejected and frustrated her withdrawal agreement three times.
The House have been divided since the Brexit movement, as most members see May as lacking what it takes to take the UK out of the European Union. Others are already calling for a rethink of the whole process, as the deadline is fast approaching for a major decision.
Tories have confirmed that there will be a new leader in place before the end of July 2019.
In a live broadcast on Friday, a tearful Theresa May said she would quit as leader of the Conservative Party on Friday, June 7. Her announcement triggers the start of a contest to replace her as Conservative leader and Prime Minister. She said:
“I have done my best,”
“Ever since I first stepped through the door behind me as prime minister I have striven to make the United Kingdom a country that works not just for the privileged few but for everyone, and to honour the result of the referendum,” May says.
“I have done my best” to deliver Brexit, May says — but she has failed to do so.
“I have tried three times.”
May adds it is a matter of personal regret for her that she has failed to deliver on her flagship policy.
