Manchester City retains the English Premier League title, after defeating Brighton 1-4 to top the League table at the end of the season with 98 points, just one point ahead of Liverpool and two points shy of the 100 points record they broke last season. The game was a must win for Manchester City as anything short of that would have seen their closest rival, Liverpool who defeated Wolves at Anfield crowned as the Champions.
Manchester City’s manager Pep Guardiola as expected, overcame an early scare from Brighton & Hove Albion as they scored first before the reigning Champions came from behind to win the game 1-4.
While Manchester City were battling it out with Brighton, the game at Anfield was going as planned for Klopp, as Senegalese forward Sadio Mane put Liverpool ahead against this season’s giant beaters, Wolves, as fans were jubilating sensing that Manchester City were already a goal down to Brighton through a Glenn Murray’s 27th-minute header from a corner. Manchester City needed to win to finish on top and ahead of Liverpool, and that they did.
The excitement at Anfield was cut short when Sergio Aguero equalised almost immediately to put his team back in the title race. The Argentine slot home a superb flick from David Silva to the delight of manager, Pep Guardiola.
Aymeric Laporte header doubled Manchester City lead from a corner, as the sky blue side kicked off their comeback, and eventual win to be crowned the champions.
The start of the second half was strange as the visitors kept possession as they are so skilled at doing, while Brighton hardly pressured them. They seemed unsure of whether to stick or twist, but Riyad Mahrez decided to make it a larger lead by smashing a shot through the outstretched glove of Mathew Ryan and into the top corner in the 64th minute.
A 72nd minute freekick goal from lkay Gundogan for the win, as Manchester City retains the Premier League title, the first time a team has retained the trophy since Manchester United did so in 2007/08 and 2008/09.
