Cristiano Ronaldo was red carded on his Champions League debut for his new club Juventus in the group G opening game against Valencia.
The former Real Madrid man who was looking to replicate his Real Madrid Champions League form in Juventus, only to have that cut short, with an embarrassing red car, that could also see him miss the game against his old club Manchester United
The Champions League leading goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo was adjudged to have engaged in an improper conduct with Jeison Murillo and appeared to put his hand on the center-back’s head in the 29th minute inside the box, with the official behind the goal signaling for an offence.
German referee Felix Brych consulted with his assistant and opted to show the red card. It was Ronaldo’s first red card in 154 Champions League games.
Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri reacting to the red card and what led to it, said:
“I can only say that VAR would’ve helped the referee in this decision,” Allegri said.
“Going down to 10 men in the Champions League for an incident like that is disappointing. We risked losing with this and we’ll miss him for the next games too.”
Juventus, who shrugged off their numerical disadvantage to win 2-0 through Miralem Pjanic’s pair of penalties,
Cristiano Ronaldo 33-year old, has won the Champions League five times with four with Real Madrid and just one with Manchester United and he is the Champions League all-time leading scorer with 120 goals.
The Portuguese could not hold back his tears, as he felt robbed and although Juventus won the game, as coming out of this group will be a very difficult one, as Juventus will be looking to appeal the red card that has been condemned by almost everybody and football fans alike.
