Super Eagles of Nigeria’s captain John Obi Mikel in a latest social media post, has confirmed the release of his father Pa. Michael Obi after he was kidnapped by unknown gunmen last week. The incident that has attracted a lot of condemnation and sympathy towards Mikel Obi and his family, left the player devastated.
According to the player, he got to know about his father being kidnapped just four hours before Nigeria’s last group game against Argentina, but could not tell anyone for the safety of his father and family members.
Pa Michael Obi was kidnapped alongside his driver Mr Ishaya John around 2:30pm in Egede Udi forest of Enugu State Nigeria on Friday afternoon while on their way from Jos.
He said did not want the sad news or as he puts it, his ‘personal issue’ to come in the way of the team in such an important game where Nigeria needed a win to qualify. Though Nigeria lost the game, Mikel placed his country first before his family and should be commended for such a heroic act.
The message from John Obi Mikel reads:
“I would like to thank the Police Authorities involved in ensuring the safe return of my father after the ordeal this week. I will also like to thank everyone for their kind words of support. He is now recuperating with family. My family and I are grateful.”
