Pearl Thusi shares yet another stunning photo from her GQ South Africa February issue. The South African who was delighted to have made it to the covers of the popular magazine, was looking ravishing with her killing pose.
Pearl Thusi has been named the queen of South Africa, is known as that woman that is not shy from exposing some body parts, as she got the killer body and brain to delight any photo shoot.
Pearl got personal as she opens up to GQ. Read some of the excerpt from the magazine.
GQ: Bro-mags have a longstanding history of being criticised for misrepresenting women, especially when it comes to female covers. It seems that you won’t find yourself on a cover unless you’re a sex object. Do you agree with that sentiment?
Pearl Thusi: I think that women do or can enjoy that kind of attention, but we obviously don’t want to be disregarded or misrepresented because of it. There’s a clear line between being a sex object and a sex symbol. I think women enjoy being on men’s magazine covers because they want to be understood. Being a sex symbol is empowering and it gives you command of your space. Women want to be appealing, but contrary to popular belief that has very little to do with men. It’s really about self-worth and personal power.
Men’s magazines often get it wrong. We have to make sure that we are being celebrated, not only because we are beautiful and desirable, but more importantly because we are intelligent, successful, empowered and fiercely motivated. If the project becomes collaborative it becomes empowering, too, which is why it’s important for a cover woman to have agency. This approach is certainly more intimate and offers a truer reflection of who that person is and, by extension, what the magazine is like.
GQ: What would you say to any person that tries to reduce your career or cover spot to mere physicality or simple sex appeal?
Thusi: ‘Do you honestly think my career or this cover was just handed to me on a platter? No. I have worked damn hard to get to this point in my life and to achieve my mental, physical and spiritual goals. This is a manifestation of all the hard work I have put in over the last couple of years. I can’t speak for every cover girl, but I can certainly speak for myself. So let’s always remember that and let’s pay our respects where they are due. Let’s honour the women who have fought to achieve their goals and who continue to help put South Africa on the map.
