Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie returned to the University Campus where she grew up in Nigeria, as she shares a video of her visit on Saturday.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie who was born in Enugu, Nigeria in 1977, grew up on the campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where her father was a professor and her mother was the first female Registrar.
The renowned writer who on Saturday 2nd August 2025, shared the video of her return to the University of Nigeria where she was being ushered into the University administrative building by students and members of staff of the university, stated that a lot has changed from what it used to be when she was still living there and now, as she speaks on her late parents who were both Vice Chancellor and Registrar during their time there.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie posted the video with this caption that reads:
“Returning to the University campus where I grew up.
First, a courtesy call at the main administrative building. It’s changed a lot but I was overcome with nostalgia still- my father’s office was in this building when he was Deputy Vice Chancellor, and years later, my mother’s office too, when she was Registrar,” she said.
She continued by adding that:
“I walked the long corridor that led to what was once my mother’s office, and remembered the staff in their small offices, the hum of their desultory conversations, the clicking of typewriters. The University mall room was on the ground floor- the ‘porter’s lodge’- and I remember hoping each time we went there to collect our mail, that there would e a letter for me from one of my penpals. The porter’s lodge is now gone, so much else is gone but the majesty of memory remains” she said.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie studied medicine for a year at Nsukka and then left for the US at the age of 19 to continue her education on a different path. She graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Connecticut State University with a degree in Communication and Political Science.
She has a Master’s Degree in Creative Writing from Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Arts degree in African History from Yale University.
