A former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Femi Fani Kayode, has once again, hit hard at critics saying that he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over an alleged forgery case.
Fani Kayode, who said he pity those saying that he was arrested by the anti-graft agency, had a few hours ago, debunked the reports in the media that he was arrested. He made a post on his official social media page on Tuesday, saying that he was only invited for questioning and was never arrested contrary to the fake news being peddled in the media.
He had said:
“Just arrived at the George Hotel for dinner. I was never arrested by the EFCC. I was invited & I flew down to Lagos to see them. I arrived in their office at 2.00 pm and left at 8.30 pm. I was granted bail on self-recognition. They were very polite and professional. Thanks be to God,” He said.
Though what he was invited for is yet unknown, Chief Fani Kayode who was before is decamping to the ruling party of the All Progressives Congress (APC0, was fans favourites, seems to be battling to convince Nigerians that he was never arrested by EFCC over alleged forgery.
His post a few hours ago, will be his second post trying to refute reports that he was arrested for alleged forgery, and Nigerians, are not buying his stories.
Taking to his official social media handle on Wednesday 24th November 2021, to once again, refuted reports of his arrest over an alleged forgery case, he posted a photo of himself with a caption that reads:
“I pity those that said I was arrested. They are filled with hate & live on fake news. Since when did an invitation & a friendly chat become an arrest? And even if I had been arrested, SO WHAT? I am not above the law & neither does joining APC give me immunity. My God is MIGHTY!,” he said.
The commission had earlier on Tuesday confirmed that the arrest of Mr Fani-Kayode in Lagos was over alleged forgery and fraud.
Fani-Kayode was being investigated for alleged forgery of his medical report to evade his ongoing trial for alleged fraud.
The EFCC is prosecuting Mr Fani-Kayode and two others on 17 counts of conspiracy, money laundering, and fraud to the tune of N4.9 billion.
The Federal High Court in Lagos had awarded a fine of N200,000 against the former minister for his absence from court with respect to the alleged N4.9 billion fraud.
The judge, Daniel Osaigor, who gave the order on October 13, asked the minister to pay the fine or stand the risk of having his bail revoked for failing to appear for his re-arraignment.
The matter was adjourned till November 30, 2021, for the re-arraignment of the defendants.
Mr Fani-Kayode is also standing trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja over the diversion of funds he allegedly took fraudulently from the office of the National Security Adviser ahead of the 2015 presidential election.
The defendant served as the spokesperson for the 2015 PDP presidential campaigns for the reelection of then President Goodluck Jonathan, who lost to the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari
