Governor Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state has visited the survivors of the Ikoyi building collapse on Thursday.
The governor in a photo shared on his official social media handle on Thursday 4th November 2021, was photographed interacting the survivors from the Ikoyi building collapse. He assured them (survivors) that the state will give them the best of care in the hospital, and will not be discharged until they have been given the all-clear by the medical team attending to them.
He said:
“As much as we sympathize with all concerned, we will also ensure that we are open and thorough in investigating the cause of the Ikoyi building collapse.
In that regard, a high-powered professional investigative panel has been set up, whose membership consists of professionals outside of the Government.
The panel which is headed by the President of Nigeria Institute of Town Planners (NITP), Mr. Toyin Ayinde have been given clear terms of reference, with a 30-day assignment to tell us what went wrong at the site.
The panel’s terms of reference also include ascertaining whether there was a compromise of the building codes by the developer, his contractor and statutory regulatory agencies.
The panel will be finding out who the culprits are. The investigation will start with the heads of regulatory agencies. Be rest assured that if there are other people found wanting in the course of investigation, everybody will face the full wrath of the law. The members of the panel are people of impeccable integrity and I will be signing an executive order to give the panel a legal backing,” the governor said.
The names of some of those rescued were given as Oduntan Timilehin, 26; Sunday Monday, 21; Adeniran Mayowa, 37; Sholagbade Nurudeen, 33; Waliu Lateef, 32, and Ahmed Kanleku, a 19-year-old Beninoise.
Death Toll From The Ikoyi building Collapse Hits 36
The death toll from the collapsed 21-storey building on Gerrard road in Ikoyi, Lagos has risen to 36.
This was confirmed on Thursday morning by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Speaking with journalists, Acting Coordinator of the Lagos Territorial Office, NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, said, “So far, 36 people – 33 males and three female have been confirmed dead, while there were nine survivors.”
Meanwhile, the survivors from the rescue operation include one female and eight males.
The operation to rescue those trapped in the rubble of the 21-storey building which collapsed on Monday afternoon is still ongoing.
Families and friends of people trapped in the rubble have kept vigil at the scene, clinging onto hope and seeking answers, three days after the disaster.
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu put the death toll at 21 when he visited the scene on Wednesday afternoon.
Although the cause of the collapse is yet to be unravelled, the governor said there were obvious violations and “mistakes from all angles” in the tragedy.
