The Governor of Ondo State, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has paid a visit to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Akure, which was gutted by fire on Thursday night.
The fire that gutted the INEC office in Akure, is coming barely one month to the Governorship election in the State, and this could be a major set back for INEC in their preparation to the governorship election.
The governor who is yet to issue a formal press statement on the incident at the INEC headquarters, said during his inspection of the area on Friday 11th September 2020, that some serious damage was done, as lots of smart card readers and election materials were burnt.
The governor shared some photos of the burnt election materials inside containers where they were kept, and the damage done to the card readers and other sensitive materials.
The fire that gutted the INEC headquarters in Akure, was reported late Thursday night, and according to the information provided on the verified Facebook account of the commission, the fire broke out at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The spokesperson of the commission, Festus Okoye, who had said on Thursday that he is in Ondo State, confirmed the development.
He had disclosed that he is currently at the office with some other staff of the commission trying to contain the fire incident.
Mr Okoye said the commission would launch an investigation into the incident.
