Former Vice President of Nigeria, and the 2019 Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Atiku Abubakar, has expressed his sadness and deepest condolences to the families of rape victims in the country.
Atiku Abubakar, just like other prominent Nigerians, on hearing the sad news of rape and murder of young girls and women in the country, took to his social media to add his voice to condemn the devilish act.
Taking to his social media page on Wednesday 3rd June 2020, he sends a message to the families of recent rape victims, saying:
“I just spoke to the family of the late Uwa Omozuwa. I expressed my deepest condolences over her rape and murder. I feel their anguish. Sadly, rape is now a pandemic in our country.
It is time we reviewed the laws on rape to ensure that there are no escape routes in the investigation, prosecution, conviction and adequate punishment for this heinous crime,” he said.
A few hours after he posted a message to all the rape victims, particularly that of Uwa Omozuwa, we reported yet another rape victim in Ibadan, whose name was given as Bello Barakat. An 18-year-old reportedly gang-raped and murdered in Ibadan, Oyo state.
Chief Atiku Abubakar, also immediately took to his social media to totally condemn the act, demanding for justice to all rape victims. He said:
“After speaking with the Omozuwa family, my attention was drawn to yet another rape and murder of another young lady, Barakat Bello, in Ibadan. As a father, I know what it is like to deal with such a loss. We are racing against time.
It is crucial that the rapist(s) of Barakat and all other victims are speedily brought to justice to serve as a deterrent,” he added.
Recall that we reported these cases of rape victims, as the case of Bello Barakat whose sad incident happened at the Akinyele area of Ibadan, Oyo state, was said to have been gang-raped and murdered by unknown men.
It was gathered that the father to Bello Barakat found her dead body around their home after her body was examined, they discovered that she was raped, then she got murdered.
Bello Barakat, aged 18, was a first-year student of Federal College of Animal Health and Production in Ibadan.
It was gathered that she has been buried according to Islamic rites.
Miss Uwaila Omozuwa, was the 22-year-old and 100level Microbiology student of the University of Benin that was raped and murdered inside a church in Benin.
