Hurricane Dorian: Gov. Kemp orders immediate evacuation in Georgia

The Governor of Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp has on Sunday issued an executive order to declare a state of emergency in twelve counties, as he calls for a mandatory evacuation of all areas east of I-95 in coastal Georgia due to the likely impact of Hurricane Dorian.

The Governor in a press statement listed the first six counties to be evacuated ahead of Hurricane Dorian and these counties are Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Glynn, Liberty, and McIntosh. These counties are expected to be evacuated on Monday afternoon. 

The Governor in his state address on Sunday night, had this to say to those in the 6 county areas, he said:

“Ahead of Hurricane Dorian, I have issued two Executive Orders to declare a State of Emergency in twelve counties – Brantley, Bryan, Camden, Charlton, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, McIntosh, Pierce, and Wayne – and suspend restrictions on hours of commercial vehicle operation and vehicle height, weight, and length thresholds to assist in storm preparation, response, and recovery” he said on Sunday.

The Governor’s order also directs the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA) and Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to establish westerly contraflow on Interstate 6 starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday. 

“Starting noon tomorrow, individuals east of I-95 in Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Glynn, Liberty, and McIntosh Counties must evacuate due to Hurricane #Dorian. GEMA and @gadeptoftrans will start westerly contraflow on I-16 at 8 AM on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Stay vigilant and be safe” he said.
