Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, just like last season lifted their first piece of silverware in the new season, as they beat Liverpool 5-4 on penalties to lift the Community Shield at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
The Game on Sunday had everything you could have expected from both teams, as they both shared each half of the 90minutes, in terms of goals, pressure, and overall play. But it was Manchester City who ended up lifting the Community Shield after beating Liverpool 5-4 on penalties, following a 1-1 the draw after 90 minutes.
The major highlight of the game and one which would go down as the save of the year in our books, was Kyle Walker’s excellent goal-saving clearance in the 92nd minute as that was how close Salah came at lifting the Community Shield for Liverpool.
Raheem Sterling gave Pep Guardiola’s side the lead after just 11 minutes after Walker lifted a ball into the left channel for Kevin De Bruyne, which the Belgian headed into the path of David Silva in the Liverpool box. City’s No.21 then contorted his body to shift the ball on to Sterling with the outside of his left foot, and the winger’s left-footed effort squirmed through Alisson Becker.
Liverpool were all over the place in the first half, as City failed to take their chances in front of goal. But all that changed in the second half, with Liverpool bringing in some fresh legs which later changed the game in favour of the Champions League winners in the second half.
The Liverpool goal came from one of the substitutes and a defender, Joel Matip, who found the back of the net in the 77th minute from a Jordan Henderson’s free-kick. The ball came in from the right and was only partially cleared away by Walker, and landed in the way of Van Dijk on the left-hand side of the box. The Dutchman kept his composure and simply lifted the ball back into the six-yard box and in the direction of Joel Matip, with the centre-back able to leap above Nicolas Otamendi and head the ball into the ground and across the line.
That goal from Joel Matip made it 1-1, and some drama followed afterwards, but the two teams had to settle for a penalty after the 90 minutes.
The penalty kicks saw 10 shoots, with only Georginio Wijnaldum missing his, as he went left and Bravo guessed correctly, while Gabriel Jesus secured the trophy for City with their fifth penalty after stuttering in his run-up before beating Alisson, who went the right way.
