The Senator representing Gombe Central Senatorial zone Gombe State, Senator Goje has been reported to have withdrawn his interest to run for the seat of Senate President, a few days before the June 11th election for the post. He has been reported to have stepped down and endorsed his colleague the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan who has been rumoured to have been hand-picked by President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the position.
According to reports, Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna state disclosed this latest information of Senator Goje stepping down for Ahmad Lawan, after meeting behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa Abuja.
Governor el-Rufai was in the company of Senators Lawan, Senator Goje and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, while briefing State House Correspondents.
The election which will hold on the 11th June 2019, for the post of Senate President, will be an interesting one, as Nigerians will be looking to see what drama plays out this time around between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the APC in both houses of the National Assembly.
I feel if Senator Lawan who has been rumoured to have been hand-picked by President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC leadership finally gets his way and become the Senate President against the wish of the entire Senate, he could end up being yet another victim of an impeachment plot just like we had during the Obasanjo Administration.
In the history of the Senate, since Nigeria returned to Democratic rule in 1999, hardly had any Senate President handpicked and forced on the Red Chamber by the President survived impeachment (Evan Enwerem 1999, Chuba Okadigbo 1999–2000, Anyim Pius Anyim 2000–2003, and Adolphus Wabara 2003-2005).
Senator Lawan if he allows himself to be used by the executive and his party APC could also go down as one of the impeached Senate Presidents. But we are sure the PDP will not just sit and allow this election on the 11th of June go down just like that without having any form of disruption in terms of who eventually emerges the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President.
I cannot wait to see how things play out at the end, especially that of the House of Representatives where we are likely to have a much bigger drama! lol…
