The woman popularly referred to as the Queen of Afrobeat sounds, Tiwa Savage signs for Universal Music Group, as she broke the news a few hours ago on her Instagram page. She is joining the American based Music Record Label, after spending seven years with African and Nigerian based Music Record Label, Mavin.
Tiwa Savage signing for Universal Music Group makes her yet another African and Nigerian singer that will be leaving their local music record label for an International label, that seems to be testing the waters with the African sounds.
Tiwa Savage has been in the music business for some time now and should understand all the terms in her contract, and how music labels manage their artist, having spent 7-years with Don Jazzy, so I feel she should be an expection, given her experience in the business, and those behind her brand.
Speaking on her new family Universal Music Group, after her unveiling on Thursday morning, Tiwa Savage had these words for her fans all over the world.
She described the move as an incredible moment for her, as she is grateful to God for all his blessings.
On How he got to be signed into Universal Music Group, she said:
“I met with the chairman and chief executive officer of Universal Music Group, Sir Lucian Grainge after he called me, that he has listened to my music and liked it. He said he would like us to partner and work together, so we started talking about joining the group and here we are, as family”
Tiwa Savage continued with how she got into music, first as a back-up singer to Mary J Blige, after she moved to New York to where she got into a school, and there she started writing music…for herself…she said:
“Nothing like writing and singing your own song, as it is your experience”
On what it means joining Universal Music Group:
“It is like a dream joining Universal, it is a legacy, an honour as a Nigerian doing Afrobeats in Universal, and for the music to be presented to the world in the right way, I think it is an honour,” she said.
“I want to carry along my fans all over the world, and now that I am signed to Universal, I will carry along the new ones too,” she said
When she was asked about her biggest achievement as an Afrobeat singer, she said gracing the same stage with Beyonce and other big artists…
On the Afrobeat genre, she had this to say:
“It is a male-dominated genre, and it is for every new genre. But as a female, we are telling our side of the story to the rest of the world, and I can be proud to say that I am one of those women telling the story through songs.”
When asked what to tell fans what to expect from her, she said:
“You should always expect the unexpected….it is always crazy with me. I am explosive and being an African, everyone should expect that” she said.
