The President of the Nigeria Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki was a few hours ago, presented with an award of excellence by the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).
According to the NULGE who presented the award to the Senate President, they are presenting the award to Senator Bukola Saraki in recognition of his immense contributions and support for local Government autonomy, they said.
The statement from the Senate which put up a post showcasing the NULGE award reads:
“The Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has received an Award of Excellence from the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in recognition of his immense contributions and support for local government autonomy.”
The award from NULGE is not coming as a surprise, given that it was under this Senate that members are working to free the Local Government from the grip of the State Governors, by trying to give it the practical autonomy as clearly stated in the Constitution.
Although nothing has been heard about the bill since it was passed, hopefully, the bill is assented to and implemented by the Government, and respected by the State Governors, even though State lawmakers are said to be delaying the passage of the bill, due to influence from the various State Governors.
The award to the Senate President was to also mark the 40th anniversary celebration of the Union.
