Google has put out the famous “Google Doodle” to honour the late Dr Stella Adadevoh who was credited for wiping out the dreaded Ebola out of Nigeria, but unfortunately died of the disease in the process.
The move by google, is to mark her posthumous birthday ,which is today 27th October, 2018, as she was born in 1956 and would have been 62-years old today.
The late Dr Stella Adadevoh before her death was a Nigerian Physician
at the Consultant Hospital in Lagos, where the first case of the dreaded Ebola was first recorded, and it was brought into Nigeria by a foreigner.
Her legacy was that she was the one that correctly diagnosed the foreigner who happens to be a Liberian, by the name Patrick Sawyer. He was Nigeria’s first case of Ebola at First Consultant Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria on July 2014, where she ordered for the Liberian Diplomat to be detained, and kept in quarantine.
While the disease was killing so many in other African countries, She was able to come up with the idea of quarantine of those affected in Lagos Nigeria, and with the help of the then Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola and her other colleagues, the spread was quickly nipped in the bud.
On 4 August 2014, it was confirmed that she had tested positive for Ebola virus disease and was being treated, but died in the afternoon of 19 August 2014.She was survived by her husband Afolabi and son Banloke.
Her methods for treating Ebola, was later adopted by other West African countries where the Ebola virus was killing people on a daily basis. The pattern of treatment and containment introduced by the late Dr, has helped to save many lives, years after her death.
This has been the tradition of Google, as they continue to remember and honour those that have contributed immensely to humanity and in most cases lost their lives, just so others could live. The late Adadevoh was one of such people, and we are proud she is being honoured again by Google.
