Antoine Griezmann was a few hours ago, awarded with the UEFA Europa League player of the season award, as the city of Madrid continue their dominance in Europe.

Antoine Griezmann whose goals helped Atletico Madrid to win the Europa League trophy last season also took his form to the Russia 2018 FIFA World cup, where he helped his country France to win the world cup after 20-years since France last won it.

The French striker winning the award, beat his fellow countryman and Marseille’s midfielder, Dimitri Payet and another of his Atletico Madrid teammate, Diego Godin and seven other nominees to claim the UEFA award for the second tier competition. The award was given to Antoine Griezmann during the UEFA Europa League group stage draw in Monaco earlier today.

According to UEFA, Antoine Griezmann garnered the highest votes to be named the UEFA Europa League player of the year. See the voting results:

2 Dimitri Payet (Marseille) – 103 points

3 Diego Godín (Atlético) – 84 points

4 Jan Oblak (Atlético) – 43 points

5 Ciro Immobile (Lazio) – 26 points

6 Aritz Aduriz (Athletic) – 16 points

6 Koke (Atlético) – 16 points

8 Luiz Gustavo (Marseille) – 10 points

8 Florian Thauvin (Marseille) – 10 points

10 Sergej Milinković-Savić (Lazio) – 8 points

The jury was composed of the coaches of the 48 clubs in last season’s group stage, together with 55 journalists selected by the European Sports Media (ESM) group, representing each of UEFA’s member associations.

Jury members chose their top three players, with the first receiving five points, the second three and the third one. Coaches were not allowed to vote for players from their own teams.

Antoine Griezmann in last season’s UEFA competition in which his club Atletico Madrid won, played a total of eight games in the competition, scored six goals, and assisted four goals, in just six hundred and thirty minutes, and no penalties.

Atletico Madrid won the competition last season after dropping out of the UEFA champions League group stage. They are also the current holders of the Super cup, after beating their neighbour Real Madrid a few weeks ago.
