Senator Ben Bruce has come under huge criticism for advocating for free condom distribution initiatives to middle-income earners in Nigeria, by the Federal Government or through the Ministry of Health, to advert what he called a looming socio-economic catastrophe in the future, as Nigerians felt he ought to be making policy suggestions to the Federal Government to improve the situation of the economy.

Trouble started for Senator Ben Bruce who was a one-time Senator and represented Bayelsa East Senatorial Zone of Bayelsa State in 2015, when he took to his official social media handle on Monday 14th August 2023, to say that the way out of the deepening economic challenges Nigerians currently facing, especially the middle class, is for the incoming Minister of Health or Federal government to distribute free condoms.

In light of the deepening economic challenges that Nigeria faces, which have gravely impacted the middle class and exacerbated poverty levels, it is imperative for the incoming Minister of Health or the federal government to launch a free condom distribution initiative immediately,” he said.

Senator Ben Murray Bruce continued in his tweet to say: “Ensuring accessibility to contraceptives is a crucial step in mitigating a potential population explosion, particularly when the financially constrained majority may prioritise basic necessities over family planning methods. An ounce of prevention now can avert a looming socio-economic catastrophe in the future,” he added.

A few minutes after his tweet, Nigerians took to the comment section of his handle to register their take on his suggestions.

Tobi Akinbo J. @realTobiAkinbo: People that hoarded indommie noodles from poor families to share condom that’s 2k per pack for free? Dey play, just dey play

Chimdalu@mummyk01: With all do respect sir. Sex is a choice and people should be made to face the consequences of their decisions. What about the millions of women/girls out there who can’t afford sanitary pad for their monthly menstruation, who will subsidized the price or gift them one for free?

EnwereMC@McEnwere: Instead of telling Tinubu how he has continued to fail from where Mbuhari stopped or better still, suggest to him economic policies to implement in order to recover the country’s sinking economy, instead you’re here advocating for condoms?

emily osejele N G@osej_emmy: Government should launch free sanitary pad for women, it is damm too expensive now. Some people have gone back to using pieces of clothes
