Buhari Hails Akin Adesina On His Re-election As AfDB President

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Dr Akin Adesina on his re-election as the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) for the second time.

President Muhammadu Buhari who had previously given his full support to Dr Akin Adesina before his re-election on Thursday, said his victory was well deserved, while also thanking other African leaders for their support for his re-election as AfDB President.

In a message posted on the official Twitter handle of the President on Thursday 27th August 2020, the President said:

I congratulate @akin_adesina on his re-election for a second term in office as President of the @AfDB_Group. It is a well deserved victory. I have no doubt that in this second term Dr. Adesina will accomplish even more of his lofty vision for the Bank.

I thank the African Union for its early endorsement of Dr. Adesina, and also thank the shareholders of the bank who worked tirelessly for his re-election victory,” the President had tweeted.

President Muhammadu Buhari continued with his message by adding that:

“Let me reiterate my earlier pledges of the full support of the Nigerian government to ensure a successful second term for Dr. Adesina.

I pray that the Almighty God will continue to strengthen him and his team to deliver even greater development to the African continent,” he added.

Akin Adesina, the president of the AfBD, secured a second term at the body’s annual meeting in Abidjan, after months of uncertainty. He garnered all of the votes from the regional and non-regional members of the bank and will carry on in the job until September 2025.

A group of whistle blowers accused Adesina of giving contracts to friends and appointing relatives to the bank. He denied the accusations saying they were a mere attempt to tarnish his reputation.

The bank’s ethics committee cleared Adesina. In July, a panel of three international experts: former Irish premier Mary Robinson; Gambian chief justice Hassan Jallow and the former World Bank integrity vice-president Leonard McCarthy cleared Adesina of any wrong doing.
