After losing at home to Valencia in their first game at this season’s UEFA Champions League, Chelsea on Wednesday night travelled to Lille where they beat the host 1-2 to secure maximum three points and a much needed win.
The London team which looked like a team playing with three from the back with the likes of Zouma, Tomori and Azpilicueta as the three, also saw Reece James who was getting his first senior team game and Champions League and Alonso pushing more forward in the opposing half for more attacking threats.
The game in France started well for Chelsea, as they wasted no time in settling down, making the host Lille to assume a more defensive and counter attacking shape with their fast passing game.
Chelsea were rewarded for their patient play, after Abraham scored his first goal in the Champions League. But the celebration did not last long for the English side, as yet another Nigerian, Victor Osimhen equalised with a fine header for Lille.
Willian who somehow was having a terrible game on the night, was the match winner with a well taken volley that left the goalkeeper with no chance, as the Blues returned home with all points.
Still on the same group, Ajax thrashed Valencia 0-3 to top the table with six points from two games.
Ajax who went all the way to the semi finals last season before they were taken out by Spurs, are clearly looking to do the same this time around, but they will have to take out Chelsea which will not be easy. But both teams could end up being the top two advancing from the group. See other results from Wednesday night game:
