Anambra First Lady, Mrs Nonye Soludo has praised the Anambra State Government, for thier quick intervention in setting up holding centres for flood victims across the various Local Government ravaged by flood.
Anambra First Lady, Mrs Nonye Soludo who shared a series of photos from some of the Local Governments, especially the Anambra West Local Government area visited by some State and local officials, in her statement on Wednesday 5th October 2022, also urged residents displaced by the wreck to immediately move to these holding centres.
“I want to commend Anambra State Government for quickly setting up holding centres across the flood-hit Local Government Areas. This timely step is the first shot at bringing relief to those who have been displaced from their homes by the wreck.
I also want to urge those who haven’t moved to the centres to immediately do so, with the assurance that every provision has been made to cater for them,” she said.
Stating further, she said:
“While I urge the government to also keep a close tab on the health of those in the centres. I appeal to caregivers at the camps to prioritise hygiene and healthy living, especially among women, children, old people pregnant and nursing mothers.
Everyone in the centres should sleep under insecticide-treated nets, to avoid mosquito bites which could cause malaria.
As we brace this difficult chapter together, I urge us to hold strongly unto hope and let the bond of love hold us tighter as one people. This is an important period to shine our lights of compassion. This, too, shall pass,” she added.
Anambra Flood:
The statement by the Anambra First Lady is coming days after the acting State Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Anambra, Mr Thickman Tanimu, confirmed that at least 651,053 persons in six local government areas of the state had so far been displaced by flooding.
He said that Ogbaru had the highest number of victims with 286,000 persons.
He said that Anambra West and East Local Government Areas (LGAs) followed with 237,000 and 103,000 victims, respectively.
He said that Awka North LGA had 10,345 victims, while Ayamelum had 9,240 flood cases with 5,468 displaced persons.
